Gainesville-Area Woman Wins Moe’s Southwest Grill® Facebook Contest, Original Salsa Recipe to Debut Nationwide

“Three Bears Salsa” Coming to Fast-Casual Burrito Franchise Oct. 3

ATLANTA – Oct. 2, 2013 – Cheryl Gallowitz, a veterinary technician from Newberry, Fla., will have her original salsa recipe debut in Moe’s Southwest Grill® restaurants nationwide on Thursday, Oct. 3. Gallowitz entered her creation, dubbed “Three Bears Salsa,” in Moe’s “Raise the Salsa Bar” Facebook contest during the summer of 2012 and won the grand prize of $1,000. One year later, the southwest-style burrito franchise is now ready to unleash the new salsa to customers across the U.S. for a period of six months.


Gallowitz moved to Gainesville from New York four years ago and invented the winning salsa recipe in memory of her favorite cantina back home. She then began serving it at social gatherings to much acclaim and decided to enter the Moe’s contest on a whim when she saw an advertisement in June of 2012.


The “Three Bears Salsa” consists of diced tomato, onion, red pepper, green pepper, tomatillo, cilantro, pickled jalapenos, red wine vinegar, sea salt and lime juice. Described by Gallowitz, it’s “not too hot, not too mild, but just right” – an homage to the taste and the fairy tale.


“It was a really fun experience to be a part of and I’m excited to see how my salsa turns out in the restaurants,” said Gallowitz. “I’m thankful to Moe’s for even giving me this opportunity in the first place.”


Gallowitz, who works at the University of Florida Large Animal Hospital, says her favorite location is on her way home from work – the Moe’s at 3832 W. Newberry Road near University Avenue. She began going there for the “Moe Monday” $5 burrito promotion. Other Gainesville Moe’s locations can be found on the University of Florida campus at Rec Center Dining and at 3443 SW Archer Road and 7770 W. Newberry Road.

The Stack is Back at Moe’s Southwest Grill – For Good!

Fans petition online to bring Stacks back in restaurants

ATLANTA (Oct. 1, 2012) Moe’s Southwest Grill® restaurants are bringing the Stack™ back as a permanent menu category. The Stack is two crunchy corn tortillas wrapped inside a grilled flour tortilla, stuffed with seasoned beans, shredded cheese, fresh pico de gallo and Moe’s Famous Queso and can be ordered as the “Wrong Doug” with the customer’s choice of all-natural chicken, pork or 100% sirloin steak and “Julia Gulia”, a meatless vegetarian-friendly option.

The Stack was introduced in 2011 as a limited time only item and its return is due, in part, to a consumer-generated social campaign. Hard core fans of the product created a “Petition to Bring Back Moe’s Taco Stacks” Facebook page and surpassed their goal of 1,000 supporters. The page reads: “The best item on the Moe’s menu is gone, help bring it back. For the cause. All of our souls ache.”

“Me and my friends fell in love with the Stack and when they were no longer available, we wanted to do something to get Moe’s attention to try and get them back in restaurants,” said Grant Kilgore, the administrator of the Stacks petition fan page. “Moe’s got wind of the page and listened – we’re happy we played a part in bringing [the Stack] back and cannot wait to walk into our local Moe’s, order one and see all signs in the restaurant attributing the comeback to the fans.”

“We love engaging with our fans online, but this is a great example of the true passion our customers have for our food and how we were able to bring that to life in our restaurants,” said Paul Macaluso, vice president of marketing for Moe’s Southwest Grill. “Bringing back the Stack as a permanent menu item adds yet another option for our customers to celebrate their originality through customization.”

While the Stack will be permanent, there are two new, unique flavors of the season that, for a limited time only, can be found at Moe’s free salsa bar. Made with fresh, natural ingredients, the Fiery Tomatillo salsa is HOT and made with tomatillos and cilantro spiced with fresh jalapeños and habanero peppers and the Serrano Poblano salsa has fresh serranos and poblano chilies blended with tomatoes with hints of lime and cilantro.

Moe’s new Spicy Queso and Jalapeno Sour Cream are the featured ingredients of the Spicy Burrito, Quesadilla and Rice Bowl. The contrasting sensation of the cool sour cream with the fiery jalapeno adds a bold twist to this hot new menu item. 

The Spicy Queso, which features the smoky chipotle flavor of Moe’s Hard Rock n Roll Sauce combined with its famous Queso, can now be enjoyed as a side item with any meal in addition to the Spicy Trio.
