BURLINGTON, VT (September 23, 2009) – Because Burlington can’t get enough fresh made-to-order Homewrecker burritos, local owners Sueayn and Philip Wood are opening their second Moe’s Southwest Grill at 85 Retail Way in Taft Corners on October 15. In true Vermont style, the Woods have gone the extra mile to provide a restaurant option that serves the community more than just flavorful southwest fare. The Woods are working with the USGBC to earn a LEED certification for their new restaurant and are working to help raise funds for the Addison, Chittenden, and Franklin County Humane Societies.
Sueayn and Philip Wood selected the site in May 2007 and have since been focused on building an energy efficient restaurant to achieve LEED certification. Their goal is to become the first LEED certified restaurant in the Moe’s chain and in the state of Vermont.
“It’s exciting to be the first Moe’s restaurant to attempt LEED certification,” explains Sueayn Wood. “We have certainly faced our share of challenges along the way, but we believe it is the right thing to do. Our hope is that some of the innovations that have been discovered through this process can be applied to other Moe’s restaurants throughout the country. Now that we’ve paved the way, we hope others will follow.”
Some of the complex areas of focus are: LED lighting, energy efficient cooking and HVAC equipment, a Freeaire management system for their Walk-In, certified materials for building the structure, and compliant furnishings.
At the grand opening this October, Moe’s will host a VIP party prior to opening to the public to help raise funds for the Northwestern Vermont Humane Societies. On opening day, Moe’s will present a check to these Humane Societies to help with the financial support required to operate these no-kill shelters.
“The work that the Humane Societies do for Vermont is extremely important and admirable,” explains Sueayn Wood. “From the moment we selected the Taft Corners site, we knew we wanted to do our part to help with this organization’s mission. We hope that Moe’s can be a partner in helping to raise awareness and funds so good pets can find good homes.”
The new Williston location will be open Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. and will be one of two locations in the nation to offer Carvel Ice Cream.
